I’m Not a Skincare Minimalist. I’m a Skin Strategist.
Why a strategic approach to skincare outperforms every trend, every time.
By Dr. Marianna Blyumin-Karasik (Dr. MBK)
Board-Certified Dermatologist & Founder, Stamina® Cosmetics
Somewhere along the way, “skincare minimalism” became the gold standard. The idea that fewer products equals better skin took hold, and suddenly, anyone using more than three steps was doing too much.
I disagree with extremes. I agree with personal skin strategy.
As a holistic board-certified dermatologist, I’ve spent years studying how skin responds to stress, environment, and lifestyle. And what I’ve learned is this: skin doesn’t need less or tons. It needs a smarter strategy. (If you’re curious about the science, read more about how stress shows up on your skin first.)
I’m not a skincare minimalist. I’m a Skin Strategist. And if you care about the long-term health and resilience of your skin, you should be one too.
What Is a Skin Strategist?
A Skin Strategist doesn’t follow trends. A Skin Strategist understands their skin at a deeper level and makes intentional, informed decisions about what goes on it and why.
It starts with three questions:
1. What are your skin’s stressors? — Environmental aggressors, hormonal shifts, sleep deprivation, emotional stress, inflammatory diet, UV (sundamage) exposure, pollution, etc. These vary person to person and season to season. (Not sure if your skin is stressed or sensitive? Here’s how to tell.)
2. What are your skin’s vulnerabilities? — Is your barrier compromised? Are you prone to redness, breakouts, blemishes or sensitivity? Do you have a genetic predisposition to certain skin conditions?
3. What are your skin’s demands? — What does your skin need right now, in this season of your life? Hydration? Balance? Repair? Protection? Calming? What are you trying to correct?
When you know the answers to these three questions, you can focus and build a regimen that actually works, one designed to protect, balance, and repair your skin with clinically grounded, adaptogenic ingredients and lifestyle modifications. That’s the goal. Not fewer steps. Not more steps. The right steps.
Why Minimalism Can Fall Short
Skincare minimalism works for some people in some seasons. But as a dermatologist, I see what happens when patients strip their routines down to the bare bones because a social media trend or trusted friend told them to.
Their skin barrier weakens or skin needs are unmet. Stress-related breakouts go unaddressed. Environmental damage accumulates without targeted protection. Premature aging accelerates because prevention steps were eliminated in the name of simplicity. This appears as blotchy, dull, rough and uneven complexion and texture.
Minimalism isn’t a strategy. It’s a reaction to overwhelm. And while I understand the impulse, your skin deserves more than a reaction, it deserves a plan.
The Strategic Approach: My Personal AM/PM Protocol
I practice what I preach. Here is my current personalized skincare regimen, designed around my skin’s stressors, vulnerabilities, and demands right now. (Looking for a guided ritual? Try our at-home facial routine for stressed skin.)

How to Become Your Own Skin Strategist
You don’t need to be a skin expert to think strategically about your skin. Start here:
Assess your stressors. What is your skin dealing with right now? Stress at work? A new climate? Hormonal changes? Lack of sleep? Be honest. Figure out how to moderate it and reduce it through lifestyle improvement and prevent it through skin care.
Identify your vulnerabilities. Where does your skin tend to struggle? Breakouts along the jawline? Redness on the cheeks? Dryness around the eyes? These patterns are data. Laser focus on this issue with skin care which can direct essential resources to balance skin needs.
Define your demands. Based on your stressors and vulnerabilities, what does your skin need most? Protection? Repair? Calming? Strengthening? Now add cosmeceutical to strengthen and energize skin renew.
Build your protocol. Choose products that directly address your answers above. If it doesn’t serve a strategic purpose, it doesn’t belong in your routine. (Not sure where to start? The Stamina Trio is designed as a foundation of strategically resilient skin.)
Your regimen should evolve as your skin’s needs change — seasonally, hormonally, and with life’s stressors. A strategist adapts. (Need a seasonal reset? Try our 3-step skin reset ritual.) That’s the difference.
